I use windows VPN to connect ot the office when I’m telecommuting. I recently had to reconfigure the VPN (due to my hard drive crash) there was a problem (which I recalled seeing earlier) that whenever the VPN would connect, it would drop my local internet connection. After a lot of trial and error I finally figured out the problem and it’s rather simple.
Go to the properties page for the VPN configuration, select the Networking tab. Open properties for “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” click on the Advanced button. On the general Tab, deselect “Use default gateway on remote network”.
That’s it. Surely other things could be screwed up with the VPN connection, but as for inadvertantly dropping the internet connection AS SOON as you connect the VPN, this should fix it.

Thanks for this. It helped me recovering my lost internet connection while connected to the VPN.
