The Law of Time and Chaos

The law of Time and Chaos is critical to the hypothesis of the book The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil it is stated as

In a process, the time interval between salient events (that is, events that change the nature of the process, or significantly affect the future of the process) expands or contracts along with the amount of chaos.

What I find most intriguing about this law, is its application to regular life. In most things in life, I’ve found that if chaos is allowed to reign, things don’t happen with it much. Whereas, when there is strict order to things, things go much more smoothly and progress is made. I know this is generally common sense, but it’s interesting to have a law that applies to it. This law also does well to explain many aspects of life – projects, work environments, home life, etc.

Of course, in the book, it is discussing how it applies to computers and processing. The clear implication of this law is that as we develop more technology to better organize and explain knowledge, intelligence, and the human brain we’ll experience a more rapid explosion of technological developments in that area to the point of a ‘singularity’ where the development of them are accelarating at a rate that we are no longer able to control it.
