Bees are dying across the world?

If these stories are true, and if the conclusions of the research is accurate and not a bunch of psycho-babble then we have a MAJOR problem on our hands that is going to be VERY difficult to resolve. If this stuff is true and accurate, Global Warming is the very least of our problems.

The Independent, a U.K. publication reports some very disturbing news regarding bees. I found this link through IFTF Future Now.

According to the report, bees across the world are abandoning their hives in swarms and presumably dying off. The current suspect is apparently Cell Phones which I find even less credible but still potentially alarming. What I want to know is if the reports of mass abandonment of hives by the worlds honey bees is really going on, because if it is we’re in for some real trouble.

For those non-naturalists out there like my niece who won’t eat the eggs from my chickens because she prefers the eggs the store makes, if we don’t have honey bees, we don’t have food. Period. End of Eating. Bees pollinate or fertilize many of the fruits and vegetables we eat, without them we would not have the majority of the food available to us and would be left with eating, well, grass. (There are other pollinating insects and methods, but in farming, it’s the bees that do the work)

According to the report, mobile phones may be the culprit because someone noticed that if a phone was placed by a hive the bees wouldn’t come back. My question is, if bees are abandoning hives in droves, who is out there holding a cell phone by all the hives? Or is it supposed to be that the combined radio waves of all the worlds cell phones are disrupting bees navigation?

Like I said, I’m even more skeptical of cell phones being the cause of the problem, but let’s just accept it for a minute. If all of this were true, that bees are abandoning their hives and cell phones were the root cause, we would HAVE to get rid of cell phones in their current state. We would HAVE to turn them all off and build new technology that wouldn’t disrupt the bees. Forget Global Warming, if we kill all the bees off with our cell phones we’re dead.

This article also references the scientific reports that cell phone radiation will cause tumor growth on the side of the head that you use your phone on, will affect sperm growth and other problems. I’m skeptical of that information as well but I sure wish that a whole bunch of scientists would study cell phone radiation (that weren’t influenced or tied in any way to mobile phone technology interests) and tell us if we’re killing ourselves.

I’m not buying too heavily into any of this yet, I’ll still continue to use my Treo 700w which is pretty much a mobile computer. But if any of this stuff is accurate, the whole world is going to have to change. This feels like the movie Johnny Mnemonic.
