Sony announces paper thin video screen

Yesterday Sony announced that it has developed a razor thin video display that bends like paper! The display combines Sony’s organic thin film transistor, or TFT, technology, which is required to make flexible displays, with another kind of technology called organic electroluminescent display, or OLED. The new display is capable of displaying 16.7 million colors and is 0.3 mm thick.

I’ve always wanted to use the type of flexible documents they use in StarGate, Minority Report and tons of other Sci Fi flicks. It will probably take at least another year for this stuff to go mainstream, but when it does it’s gonna be awesome! I think this kind of technology will change the world in a lot of ways. Sony does too:

“In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person’s wrist, even worn as clothing,” said Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa. “Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper.”

I love the idea of it being on your clothing – actually the product I’m hoping for is something that can be worn on your forearm as a video interface. It sounds like this new screen could work really well as lens screens for interface goggles or glasses as well.

Sony has a video demo of the new ePaper available here.
