First thoughts on The Dip

Now that things have settled down from the Seth Godin event, I’ve read “The Dip”, by Seth Godin, three times now – the second and third passes were actually at the same time as I studied it carefully and marked it up very heavily, taking notes in the outside binding.

The Dip

I must say, this is a profoundly thought provoking book. It’s not ground-breaking or earth-shattering new ideas, it is an extremely well laid-out structure for becoming the best you can possibly be. That structure is developed around not allowing yourself to be distracted by other dead-end pursuits. The thing I love about this book is that it outlines a method for the madness of my life. I’m actually a big quitter (and a big Not-Starter) – I’ll explain that in a later post.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who strives to be the best at what they do, anyone who wants to be extremely successful. It will truly help you achieve your goals and, if you follow it, will force you to analyze and acknowledge those things that are holding you back.

I’m planning on writing a long review of the book, but I’m still reserving all my thoughts until later, after I’ve had a few ‘book-review’ meetings with some friends to hash out the ideas in the book and take a deep dive into the concepts.

For now though, if you have been thinking you probably don’t need to read another marketing book or another Godin book – you’re wrong. This book is very short and very easy to read and is NOT I repeat NOT a book about marketing. Seth has removed all the usual fluff and junk you find in most books. It’s easily a less than hour read if you set aside time and sit down and concentrate on it. Then, if you find it valuable, it will be well worth contemplative studying for several hours. With less than 70 pages of reading in a very small book, it’s light and easy but slams home.

Go read it (if you need a copy, I know where a few hundred of them are for free ;) )
