Harry Potter – best one of the series yet

I consider Harry Potter geeky enough to talk about on my blog, although it’s rather mainstream. :)

Tuesday night I took two of my boys to a midnight opening show of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and I loved it! Yeah, it left a lot out of the books, and there was a lot of wasted time in it, but they made up for all that in the last 30 minutes or so. For the first time in a Harry Potter movie, they actually had a major magic duel! I’ve always been bugged that Harry Potter was supposed to be about magic users but the movies had never really utilized magic to its full potential. That all changed at the end of this movie. The stupid yelling of a spell while you flick your wand was out as multiple wizards battled to kill each other. Did I mention I really enjoyed it? We’ll be picking up our copies of the final book next week and I’m sure I’ll spend most of the weekend reading it.

Also in recent movies, I haven’t weighed in on Transformers – I totally loved it as well! I agree with some of the reivews I read that towards the end it became yet another transforming, but that’s fine with me. My absolute favorite scene was when Barricade and Bumblebee were fighting towards the begining and Barricade jumps at Bumblebee and transforms in mid-air. Maybe it was because it was one of the first major transforms we saw, but I yelled at clapped at that one! Sure they deviated from the original stuff, but this was a reboot and we knew it – and it rocked! I’ll be seeing this one a few dozen more times I’m sure, definately more than I’ll rewatch SpiderMan 3 and Fantastic Four 2.

Fantastic Four was a bit of a disappointment. There was some cool stuff and it was entertaining, but I swear some of these directors/producers just don’t get it that in a Super Hero movie, there needs to be a lot of over the top Super Hero action – constantly. I was pretty bored most of the time in that show.

In non-Geeky films, but still kick-butt, Die Hard 4 was awesome! It went a bit over the top with the jet, but hey, he’s kind of a super hero, right? :) This movie required you to overlook a lot of the typical Hollywood “I’m a hacker so I can do anything in 5 seconds” approach – it was kind of funny watching Justin “I’m a Mac” Long pretend to be a hacker. But overall, the film was totally action-packed and showed that computers reign supreme – as long as you don’t have Jon McClane hanging around! And of course, Bruce Willis said “Yippi Kaya ..” in it!

I can’t think of what else is coming out this summer – what are you looking forward to being released?
