Leukemia: So cute it just might kill you.

This is Day 37 of my baby, Serenity being diagnosed with and treated for Leukemia.  Day 36 is here.

K, I admit that I’m probably, maybe a teeny little bit biased here – but I think these are super cute pictures of Serenity (probably not quite as cute as your kid though ;) ).  I’m calling this photo shoot (we took about 300 pictures) a “Celebration in Baldness” and these are my favorite shots.  We’re trying to select one to be her new banner glamour shot on her website, we’ve narrowed it down to these and want to know – what do YOU think?  Please let us know in the comments which of the pictures you think are the best “poster child” shot!  Thanks! (each photo is linked to a larger version)  You can view all the photos on Serenity’s new flickr feed here.

She is a doll and she’ll be proud of all these pictures for the rest of her life. My favorite is number 4.

  2. Phil801

Thanks Devin, Adria is voting for number 4 also – I still can’t decide – hence the voting :)

  3. Jesse Stay

    I like #2

  4. Michelle

I do like number 4 as well but number 3 shows off her gloriously bald (and beautiful) head and she sorta looks like she’s saying “I need YOU to help me kick Cancer’s rump”.

She’s sooo darling. And what a tough little one she is.

  5. Phil801

@Jesse – I’m leaning heavily towards that one too.

@Michelle – I was actually thinking of using that one on a banner that said something like “Have YOU donated blood today?” or “I need YOU to donate blood!” And I’m with you, I’m leaning towards one that her cute baldness shows :)

She definitely looks like she is doing her thing in 4, 5 is pretty spunky. I’m no help! She is just too appealing and your narrative too strong to do anything but pick which is most potently *your Serenity*.

  7. Maria

I like #2. Her expression in that one is priceless, IMO.

  8. Bunnie

I LOVE #4! What a baby doll! My prayers go out to her and you guys. I can’t even imagine!

  9. Corrie

#4, or #2 – like them both. She is a doll!

  10. Damselfly

    I love picture 4!

  11. Paulette

    Number four is beautiful.

  12. Amy Rhoads

    Hey Phil!

I just chopped my hair off and I am donating it to a organization that makes wigs for little girls who have been diagnosed with leukemia. If we can arrange it, she can have my hair with all the love I can give!

    Amy Rhoads
p.s. she is adorable without it so I can understand if you don’t want it! :-) I am voting for #3…I love #4 but you gotta show that beautiful bald head.

  13. Ash

Awesome. Now she matches her dad.

  14. Katie

I like number 1 the best. The bald ones are hard to take, but maybe that’s the point. Of the bald ones, I like #2 the best – I love the expression.

  15. Jordan

#3 FTW! #2 is good too though.

I don’t think the message is conveyed with the handkerchief on.

  16. Breanne

    #4 gets my vote!

  17. elly parker

    # 4 definitely! She has that wise look in her eye that I’ve seen in other pics you’ve posted – although I’ve never met you/your family, that’s the one that seems most appropriate to me…

  18. Cheryl

I’m a huge fan of #2, with #4 a close second. Bald is beautiful, and I think she should show it off proudly.

  19. Roland Smith

I’m a big fan of #3 … with #4 as a second place vote. What a delightful set of pictures! Thanks and do a followup in a few weeks.

  20. Phil801

Thanks to all of you that have voted so far! It looks like right now #4 is the clear forerunner with 2 and 3 being very popular favorites. Keep on voting!

    @Amy Rhoads
That is so cool that you did that! I appreciate the offer of directly giving your hair to her, that’s so nice of you! I’m going to turn you down though and let someone a bit older use your hair, fortunately she is young enough that she’s pretty happy about being bald :) My oldest daughter did locks of love a few years ago and now Gibson is close to being ready to donate hers too. I believe Adria’s mom used a wig from locks of love before she died of cancer. I think it’s AWESOME that you donated your hair!

  22. Brandi

    i love #1 but i think i’ll have to go with #3!

  23. Ash

I agree with Roland, #3 is best but #4 is right there.

  24. Wolfman-K

#4 for sure, that bandanna is too cool. :)

  25. Trillian1117

They are all adorable, but I like #4 with #2 my second fave. Btw, very awesome name you gave your little girl :)

  26. Deanna

I love #1 and #4!!! And that is from a professional photographer :)

  27. Connor

I like #1, with #3 in second place.

  28. Kate

    #4 and #3 are my fav’s

  29. Marina Martin

Oh man, they’re all wonderful. But my vote is for #4.

  30. Little Warrior's Mom

    I love #4! Wotta cutie.

  31. alyssa

    I like number 1 and 2.

  32. Phil801

Wow! The votes keep rolling in! #4 is still in the lead, but 3 and 2 are picking up steam – even a few votes for 1 and 5 (1 was my teenage daughters favorite and she was bummed until Deanna voted – she felt vindicated that a professional photographer agreed with her :) )

Thanks everyone for voting! And if you haven’t voted yet, don’t be shy, leave a comment! This has been a lot of fun for the family.

  33. Andrew

I am sorry, don’t have time to vote. All pics are very cute. I wanted to tell you that my daughter was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, B-cell type) at the age of 3 months. She was probably born with it, but it took us time to pick up the symptoms and eventually get the diagnosis.

A year of hell in Oncology Department followed. For 10 days she did not have a single neutrophil in blood, developed focal encephalitis. Although her brother is a perfectly matched donor (all HLAs identical), the transplanted bone marrow was not accepted. After lethal chemotherapy meant to wipe out all the bone marrow cells and lymphocytes she recovered her own blood cells and lymphocytes.

She is now 14, short (below the 1st percentile), but otherwise healthy. And tries to manipulate her parents like all girls her age.

  34. Vicki

Picture #2 is a mini Phil. My vote is for Picture #4. She’s holding her beads and looks so sweet.

  35. erika

    picture 2 !!!

  36. Jenny Wallace

I love the pics!!! My favorites 2 and 4… they are all soooo cute. She’s so adorable!

  37. Jodi Pilcher (Korwynne@Amitys)

    I like #4 best.

My daughter donated to locks of love this past weekend to help children like Serenity. We talk about your sweet little girl often.

  38. Peter

    I vote for picture 4..

  39. Gary

#1 is definitely my favorite. I could easily see 3 or 4 working well on the web site, though.

  40. Joel

I vote for them all. She’s beautiful.

  41. Cindy

We love #2! It shows off her beautiful bald head and the shirt! Love it!!!

What a beautiful girl she is!!!

  42. BeautifulFreak

Number 4 is breath taking. I shows tons of emotion. She is just beautiful.

  43. www.theseomizer.com

She is so cute. All those pictures are unique in their own way. I like #4. #3 comes second. God bless her!!

  44. Resell Rights

Its hard to choose any one of them, she is like an Angel now for all of us. So unaware of the deadly disease she is suffering from. Really painful.
