Meeting with Chris Messina

Chris , who works for Flock and started Bar Camp, is a hec of a guy who has a lot of great ideas and definately wants to change the world, and I think he’ll do it! He graciously allowed me to hang out with him for several hours on Saturday – I had 6 unscheduled hours of time after my meeting with Tara during which I was not sure what I was going to do. Thanks to Tara and Chris, I spent the afternoon being introduced to new technology, lots of new people and a lot of intriguing ideas and thoughts.

When I joined Chris at Canvas Cafe, he was in a meeting with Felix and Stefan who created Plazes and read.io . Plazes is very cool cellular geo-location technology. It tracks where you are and allows you to create ‘Plazes’ that represent places you go with a lot of meta-data being added to them. They have several features including locating Plazes around you, locating other Plazers in the area and so on. It’s extremely cool technology and it solves a business problem we have been discussing at Infobases. They have an open api so anyone can integrate Plazes into their applications. They were there discussing integrating Flock with Plazes.

Chris also talked to all of us about Civic Forge, a new idea he has for integrating open source development by creating a very useful business oriented community for developers.

After our chat, we headed to an house warming party for a Yahooligan. While there, I visited for a while with Scott Beale of Laughing Squid and Niall Kennedy of Technorati.

I had a very enjoyable and informative day on Saturday, thanks to all who helped make it so! I’m very much looking forward to future visits to San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
