FitBlogging – 4 Jun 2007, First day of endurance training.

Two and a half months ago I use to joke that the only way you could get me to ‘run’ was to chase me with a loaded gun. That’s when I started running with Adria. I could barely make it 30 seconds before I thought I was going to die.

Then, a month ago, we ran our first 5k and did pretty good for being runners for only a couple months – we finished which was our main goal. We were constantly looking into the more challenging competitions and setting our sights on them. Then, this last weekend, my brother and sister in law ran the Squaw Peak 50 miler – in 10 and 12 hours respectively. Sitting at an event like that where you’re in total awe of every person who comes through the finish line for completing such an amazing feat sucks! I kept wishing I could do it, Adria and I kept swearing to each other that we were going to do it next year. I took that very seriously.

I looked at the state running schedule and saw that there is a half-marathon (13.1 miles) in 2 weekends. I also mapped out when all the other half marathons and 10 milers are and scheduled them all. I decided I’m doing a half-marathon in 2 weeks and a full marathon this fall. Then I’m going to start working in biking and swimming. Overall, my goal is to become an IronMan TriAthlete by the end of next year – it will probably be a half-ironman, but it’ll be an IronMan.

So, that’s my drive right now. Adria has an injured foot so she’s only running lightly. I started my new training schedule today – with an ‘easy’ 12 mile run (I used to laugh at a run of that distance being easy – now I know it means to take it easy on the run).

I’ve run 10 miles before, but never 12. That’s why I chose 12. I wanted to do something completely new. The first 6 miles of the run were much easier than the last six. I did the first six in 75 minutes, the last 6 took 96 minutes.

My Garmin after I finished running.

It was stinkin hard! At the end, I was running about 1/10 of a mile and stopping and walking for about 1/20 of a mile. Now my legs are kinda jelly and sore. Tomorrow is a 4 mile run, and I’m hitting the gym tonight to do a arms/shoulders workout. I’ll be doing this 12 mile run again next monday, and every monday after that. The half-marathon is on the 16th.

I’ve lost 10 pounds since I started tracking.
