More SESNY06

At SES this morning, i sat through some great presentations on Links and Link Recruitment. There were some interesting ideas presented that I hadn’t really thought much about. The main focus of the talks was linking, but the main issue discussed was that Search Engines are looking for ways to know if they can trust links. So, basically, I was in a session that was talking about strategies for getting links that search engines will think are trustable. It seems that the very fact that the session happened pretty much destroys the credibility of anything they were discussing as it will now be exploited and create more untrustable link sources.

But anyway, some of the interesting places they were saying to try to get links from were libraries, universities and the military. Apparently having links from a non-.com site has more weight to it. So, the first thing is to get links from .org, .edu and .mil. I was thinking, why do those have more weight than .com? I think it’s probably basically because those sites don’t pimp links quite as much as .coms do – so, the strategy is to get them to pimp your link. Pretty soon the only reliable links for search engines will be …. well … maybe they’ll just do away with link ranking (not).

Seriously though, there has got to be a better way for the search engines to rank sites. The big problem here of course is all the spam crap out there and how to filter it out. I think the only way to solve the problem at this point is for Google to create a strike force that will be dispatched to the spammers and take them out or something. Spam, Splogs, Spites, I’m sick of seeing them. It’s interesting to read posts about how adwords has cut people off for no reason – it’s evident that they are trying to crack down on the spammers and cut them off. The problem is that these spammers have figured out how to make tons of money off their spam tactics, probably the only way to cut them off is to cut off some legit people too.

So, here’s a post that’s really about nothing but my random thoughts for the morning. I’m seriously thinking about linking to a phentermine site pre-emptively for the spammers – they’ll be doing it themselves soon enough though.

I’m surprised to hear that a .org would carry more weight than .com since they are equally easy to obtain. But for .edu and .mil the extra weight makes sense.

I was surprised too Richard, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Eric Ward was the one who said it.
