Sun to buy MySQL, Oracle to buy BEA

Wow!  Jonathan Schwartz announced this morning that Sun is going to acquire MySQL for $1 Billion!  My first thought: “Ok, cool, what does this mean for MySQL, a database system that I heavily use?  Schwartz says:

…in addition to acquiring MySQL, Sun will be unveiling new global support offerings into the MySQL marketplace. We’ll be investing in both the community, and the marketplace – to accelerate the industry’s phase change away from proprietary technology to the new world of open web platforms.

Sounds great, hopefully with Sun’s backing MySQL will be able to make new waves and go new directions.

In other news, Oracle bought BEA for $8.5 Billion – sheesh!
